Review

Dim Sum for Everyone was one of my favorite picture books growing up. There weren’t a lot of Asian Americans in picture books back then—Grace Lin was one of the few author/illustrators who gave us that representation. In fact, her books, Alan Say’s, and the Yoko series by Rosemary Wells (which are amazing but star an Asian American cat, not an Asian American person) are the only ones I remember with Asian characters. Things have progressed so much since then, with beautiful books like Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho, Beautifully Me by Nabela Noor, and Watercress by Andrea Wang, and Grace deserves a lot of the credit for getting us there.

But we still have so far to go. Dim Sum for Everyone has been banned in Florida. This is why we have to stand up to censorship and anti Asian hate; I don’t want to live in a country that censors books about Asian food. So keep reading—and writing—books with AAPI characters! AAPI heritage month is almost over, but we should support AAPI folks all year round. The first step? Pick up a copy of Dim Sum for Everyone ❤️
